After 169 years of construction, Antwerp Cathedral reached a height of 123 meters in 1521, dominating the city’s skyline. It is the tallest Gothic structure in the Netherlands.
An iconic collection of important pieces of art, including a number of Rubens paintings, can be found in the Cathedral. The seven-nave church has finally been returned to its previous architectural splendor after twenty years. Rubens’ “Elevation of the Cross” and “Descent from the Cross” are fascinating examples.
The first stop on any trip to Antwerp is the Cathedral of Our Lady.
